Via this page we can add what there is still to do to get this Wiki the way we want it to. You can add to it, you can sign up to what you want. I propose we add a list of things here, and the person who wants to work on something, adds his name at the end of it. All right?

@all - I've gone through and:

* the links have been rebuilt and tested,
* the images are all imported and roughed into the page,
* add bolds and breaks to make it presentable

There's a list below of a few 404s, and I skipped the changelogs and reject-candidate areas. It went very quickly and was very informative, too.. thanks! I'll be heading back to my site, and I hope to meet you all sometime in the future. You'll find me as 'Ed in Seattle' on the message boards.. thanks again!
@all,
I'm looking into using one or more different fonts, but need some input on that. What do you think is a good font, and font size?
We have to keep in mind that it needs to look good on all platforms, be it PC, Mac, tablet, phone.
The default font is arial, I think. Jord (talk) 15:44, 18 June 2016 (UTC)
I noodled with it a bit.. I upped the font-size in .mw-body-content to 1.0em and it looks alot better. The default's sans-serif, which is nice and agnostic, and it looks pretty good, too. Verdana's a bit too goofy for my taste, trebuchet and tahoma are kerned a bit tight, we can save courier for any seti@home entries =]. The various gaps all need tweeking, tho, my best guess is line-height: 1.3em, p margin 0.875em 0 ..for now.. Bowtieguru (talk) 03:05, 22 June 2016 (UTC)
I think all we do with Seti@Home entries is write them in wingdings. ;-) You're right on the sans-serif being default. Can you describe in detail, on some page here in the wiki (make one) what you meant with "I upped the font-size in .mw-body-content to 1.0em"? Thanks. Jord (talk) 11:07, 23 June 2016 (UTC)
Here's a Style_test_page with a range of font sizes and line-heights - Bowtieguru (talk) 06:00, 26 June 2016 (UTC)
I certainly like font-size: 0.875em; line-height: 1.1em; font-family: verdana;, but maybe the slightly bigger font as well. Tried it in two browsers and it looks different in both. Jord (talk) 13:58, 27 June 2016 (UTC)
You're right, it looks like the stroke width is different across browsers but (luckily) the character shapes stay the same. Strange. I tried to edit common.css but it's unreachable (I think) with my privs. Here are the help files on sytle sheets, there's a system variable to enable it, too. Here's some css - Bowtieguru (talk) 03:21, 30 June 2016 (UTC)

.mw-body-content { line-height: 1.1em; font-size: 0.875em; font-family: verdana; }
.mw-body-text p { margin: 1.0em 0; }
I think it's best if we keep the common.css as it is for now, I can always ask Neil to edit it. But I don't necessarily need to change all text fonts.
So I'll opt for one or more templates that we can use in front of the the FAQs. I'm at the end of a 3 week bout of bronchitis, with lots of sleeping and not much computing. I'll be taking a look at things this weekend. Jord (talk) 18:06, 30 June 2016 (UTC)
<strike>@all, I was out with a 40C (104F) flu for the past days and am still not 100%. @all, it's going to take me much longer to come back. I'm completely drained of energy and only want to be behind the keyboard at this time for GTA V. Not much else. Mostly warming the couch watching Person of Interest (seasons 1 to 4). I'm not putting any time on a return. Best reach me by email from now on, as I don't read that much here anymore either. Jord (talk) 07:32, 15 June 2016 (UTC)
Take care of yourself! We're almost done, pretty much at the infamous 80% of 80-20 point. Most the remaining is error codes or glossary, so most of the important stuff is done pretty much. If it helps, I can give you the original FAQ text, I have it in Wikipedia code (with BBCode stripped), but also in UTF-8 code (with BBCode and HTML code), and if you're into it, all of the FAQs, including the ones from the other languages. All the end-of-line and spaces are in their normal places as well. Tell me what you need and I'll email it to you. Jord (talk) 23:09, 31 May 2016 (UTC)
Now that I've dug in a bit, the formatting is so light and different that it's actually better the old html was stripped away. It's turning out well.. and the new line-item bullets look cool, too. - Bowtieguru (talk) 17:15, 14 June 2016 (UTC)
<strike>Copy all FAQs - Jord (I'm done) and vaxfan (I think I'm done)</strike> - done
Read all FAQs, mark which need rewrites .. hmm, but how? Vaxfan - ?possibly add a wiki entry listing the Wikis that need re-writes, and we can then cross them out and date them once done?
Okay, how does one do that? Jord (talk)
(Cont'd from above) I see the old version table at the bottom of ea page - some tags were blasted on import. I'll trawl through all FAQs and add the new box at the bottom. It's kind of relaxing to do so. I know there are some pages with the old version table still there, I'll get there eventually. :) Jord (talk) 16:39, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
For now, I'm going through and repairing the gross damage, tossing in breaks for readability and inserting links. The (many) lists-of-steps were trashed, unfortunately, they're now big balls of paragraph. I'm rebuilding them as '*' ul's. No other formatting or headings, maybe some strongs here and there. Not all FAQs are questions. I have never seen an error end with a question mark. Does your Blue Screen of Death ask politely that you write down its numbers? To be clearer, if it is posed as a question, then a question mark is used. Many things are not asked as questions. For example "What causes error 4756278346?" needs a question mark --Agentb (talk) 00:36, 28 May 2016 (UTC)
Is there a guide somewhere on how to write entries? I'm completely unfamiliar with wiki.
Being a disorganised person, I intend to start somewhere in the middle, with something I know well enough - which happens to be boinc terminology. Yep I picked the easy one ;) as per above, I'll try to put a note on my profile where I am. And as far as I understood I edit the page and any comments go on the discussion page? What if I need help with a particular item?
@all,
I'm looking into using one or more different fonts, but need some input on that.
Thanks.
Here's some css - Bowtieguru (talk) 03:21, 30 June 2016 (UTC)

.mw-body-content { line-height: 1.1em; font-size: 0.875em; font-family: verdana; }
.mw-body-text p { margin: 1.0em 0; }
Rewrite/touch up/add formatting FAQs Vaxfan - If we are going to do this, do we need a "Style guide" to be worked to to minimise the re-rewrites of things that have already been done?
Yes, that would be preferable. Thursday I plan to sit down and go try out different styles, fonts and that, plus a table through which we point to the old FAQ and who wrote it.
Most all of the questions we have are in the How To? section. But let's do pedantic and call them the BOINC FAs. :) Jord (talk) 15:29, 27 May 2016 (UTC)
To be clearer, if it is posed as a question, then a question mark is used. Many things are not asked as questions. For example "What causes error 4756278346?" needs a question mark --Agentb (talk) 00:36, 28 May 2016 (UTC)
What is the oldest version we keep in the FAQs? BOINC 6, BOINC 7? Vaxfan - There are still a number of people that run BOINC 6, I'm not too sure about earlier ones, do we NEED to remove the 'old' info?
What do we do with projects? Do we add them in, leave them out? I feel to leave them out, as there are places enough that show which are available, active etc. Vaxfan - I agree in general, but maybe just a list of projects & links to them here?
Aren't they called tilde's? ;-) Uhm, when in a one on one discussion on a page, use three for short sign-offs as well, until the end of conversation and then use four? Three only signs your name. My only tongue in cheek riposte here is, a tilda is ginger beer and vodka cocktail and so four would be perfectly suitable for signing out, but even so there is a typo... It should be tildes and not tilda's (especially not tilde's ;-) ) --Agentb (talk) 00:36, 28 May 2016 (UTC)
Ha I already learned something. If you want a box, put a space at the start of the line. :)
Oh and I already warned Jord - I suffer from depression. I may disappear and reappear with no apparent rhythm or reason. If you really need to get hold of me, use email. Ok and now four wriggly lines? William (talk) 09:32, 7 June 2016 (UTC)
I have a few links at the bottom of my profile page which might be handy, and I just finished the misc faq's. Mediawiki's markup is new to me, too, it's a little odd at first but very simple and effective. It's pretty cool. I'm keeping track of where I am on both the table above and on my profile page, and adding any broken links up there too. Enjoy! It's a great way to spend an evening.
@all,
I'm looking into using one or more different fonts, but need some input on that.
Here's some css - Bowtieguru (talk) 03:21, 30 June 2016 (UTC)

.mw-body-content { line-height: 1.1em; font-size: 0.875em; font-family: verdana; }
.mw-body-text p { margin: 1.0em 0; }
All the breaks have been removed, resulting in a hairy ball of concatenated phrases. Hmf. It's a paste-fest of <cr>-*-space, it's quickest if you start from the bottom. Other breaks have disappeared, too
If it helps, I can give you the original FAQ text, I have it in Wikipedia code (with BBCode stripped), but also in UTF-8 code (with BBCode and HTML code), and if you're into it, all of the FAQs, including the ones from the other languages. All the end-of-line and spaces are in their normal places as well. Tell me what you need and I'll email it to you. Jord (talk) 23:09, 31 May 2016 (UTC)
Now that I've dug in a bit, the formatting is so light and different that it's actually better the old html was stripped away. @all - We've reached the first plateau.. The links have been rebuilt and tested, the images are all imported and roughed into the page. The first round is complete. There's a list below of a few 404s and a couple of big tables of old info that didn't seem worth rebuilding. I'm going to pass this to the next team.. thanks for giving me a chance to sit down and read the textbook, it's been a good way to fill in the gaps of my knowledge. Thanks again, and I'll see you all in the word links threads. I'll drop by every few days to check in. Rewrite/touch up/add formatting FAQs Vaxfan - If we are going to do this, do we need a "Style guide" to be worked to to minimise the re-rewrites of things that have already been done?
Aren't they called tilde's? ;-) Uhm, when in a one on one discussion on a page, use three for short sign-offs as well, until the end of conversation and then use four? Three only signs your name.
Ha I already learned something. If you want a box, put a space at the start of the line. :)
Oh and I already warned Jord - I suffer from depression. I may disappear and reappear with no apparent rhythm or reason. If you really need to get hold of me, use email. Ok and now four wriggly lines? William (talk) 09:32, 7 June 2016 (UTC)
I found Jord had linked something in his welcome email. me bad. I suppose I can take it from there ... William (talk) 13:02, 7 June 2016 (UTC)
Via this page we can add what there is still to do to get this Wiki the way we want it to. You can add to it, you can sign up to what you want. I propose we add a list of things here, and the person who wants to work on something, adds his name at the end of it. All right?

@all,
I'm looking into using one or more different fonts, but need some input on that.
Here's some css - Bowtieguru (talk) 03:21, 30 June 2016 (UTC)

.mw-body-content { line-height: 1.1em; font-size: 0.875em; font-family: verdana; }
.mw-body-text p { margin: 1.0em 0; }
Not all FAQs are questions. I have never seen an error end with a question mark. Does your Blue Screen of Death ask politely that you write down its numbers?
No, we don't NEED to remove the old info. I'm happy to keep it. Although it may need rewrites still. Jord (talk) 15:29, 27 May 2016 (UTC)
What do we do with projects? Do we add them in, leave them out? I feel to leave them out, as there are places enough that show which are available, active etc. Vaxfan - I agree in general, but maybe just a list of projects & links to them here?
I've added in all projects according to the BOINC Manager Add Project wizard and added their data as well. <strike>I understand from Agentb that you cannot add to Discussions. I've sent that off to Neil, perhaps a permission problem. Although Users should be able to create Discussions.
Installing an optimised application on the SETI@home project
These notes are written for users of a standard (32-bit) version of Windows XP, running the recommended (5.10.45) version of BOINC

I) Stage 1: Work out what your computer can do.

1.1  Find the CPU-Z website.

1.2 Download the latest version of CPU-Z.

1.3 Save it to the desktop.

1.4 Right_click, and choose 'Extract All...'.

1.5 The Compressed Folders Extraction Wizard starts. Click 'Next >'.

1.6 It will offer to extract the files to your desktop. That's fine. Click 'Next >' again.

1.7 Tick the box to 'Show extracted files'. Click 'Finish'.

1.8 Double-click the CPU-Z Application icon to run the program.

1.9 You may get a security warning. That's fine too. Click 'Run'.

1.10 Look to see what instructions your CPU can use. Make a note of the right-most entry in the group that covers MMX and SSE. In this case, it's SSSE3, so we'll use that.

Close everything down, ready for...

II) Stage 2: Find and download an optimised application.

2.1 Visit either the thread on the SETI Message Boards, or the KWSN/Lunatics site.

2.2 Find the application that best matches the information you noted down from CPU-Z. I chose SSSE3 - YOUR CHOICE MAY BE DIFFERENT. USE THE INFORMATION FROM YOUR OWN COMPUTER. Click on the download link, and choose 'Save'.

2.3 Save it to the desktop again...

2.4 Right_click, and choose 'Extract All...'.

2.5 You should see some instructions. Read them anyway, but they should match the rest of this FAQ.

2.6 Double-click on 'Files to install'.

2.7 Select all four files: right_click, and choose 'Copy'.

2.8 Click on 'My Computer', to get an overview of your system.

2.10 You need to find the SETI project folder. This is the standard place for BOINC version 5, but your installation may vary (*). Check that the filenames you can see look something like this.

(*) When you're using a BOINC 6.2 version or above, the default Data directory can be found at:

* Windows 98/SE/ME: C:\Windows\All Users\BOINC\ or C:\Windows\Profiles\All Users\BOINC\
* Windows 2000/XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC\
* Windows Vista: C:\ProgramData\BOINC\

The directory can be hidden on Windows 2000, XP and Vista, so make sure you are allowed to view hidden files and folders in your Windows Explorer.

2.11 Right-click anywhere in the folder, and choose 'Paste'.

2.12 If you're already using an earlier optimised application, you may get a warning about overwriting a file: this won't happen for first-time optimisers. Click 'Yes' if you see this.

2.13 The files you last saw in 'Files to install' appear in the folder.

Close everything down, ready for...

III) Stage 3: Activating and testing your new optimised application.

3.1 Right-click on the task bar at the bottom of the screen, and choose 'Task Manager'.

3.2 Click on the 'Processes' tab, and on the header for the 'CPU' column. Note that two copies of the standard Berkeley application are running (yes, they've been running all through the previous 24 stages!).

3.3 EITHER: Exit BOINC, and restart it OR Open the service control panel and restart BOINC from here: this depends on your installation type.

3.4 And there you have it: you are now running an optimised SETI application.

3.18 All that is left to do is to clean the temporary files off your desktop.

I) Stage 1: Work out what your computer can do.

1.1  Find the CPU-Z website.

1.2 Download the latest version of CPU-Z.

1.5 The Compressed Folders Extraction Wizard starts. Click 'Next >'.

1.6 It will offer to extract the files to your desktop. That's fine. Click 'Next >' again.

II) Stage 2: Find and download an optimised application.

2.1 Visit either the thread on the SETI Message Boards, or the KWSN/Lunatics site.

2.10 You need to find the SETI project folder. This is the standard place for BOINC version 5, but your installation may vary (*). Check that the filenames you can see look something like this.

(*) When you're using a BOINC 6.2 version or above, the default Data directory can be found at:

* Windows 98/SE/ME: C:\Windows\All Users\BOINC\ or C:\Windows\Profiles\All Users\BOINC\
* Windows 2000/XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC\
* Windows Vista: C:\ProgramData\BOINC\

3.1 Right-click on the task bar at the bottom of the screen, and choose 'Task Manager'.
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_14.png

3.2 Click on the 'Processes' tab, and on the header for the 'CPU' column. Note that two copies of the standard Berkeley application are running (yes, they've been running all through the previous 24 stages!).
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_15.png

3.3 EITHER: Exit BOINC, and restart it OR Open the service control panel and restart BOINC from here: this depends on your installation type.
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_16a.png
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_16b.png

3.4 And there you have it: you are now running an optimised SETI application.
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_17.png

3.18 All that is left to do is to clean the temporary files off your desktop.

The following FAQ was written by Richard Haselgrove and Mark Sattler. They also provided all the screen shots. If you think it's too much for one FAQ, blame them. Both can be found on the Seti forums. :-)

Warning: if you're using a modem, there are a total of 31 pictures to load. Luckily none are too big, but if it causes problems let me know.

Click on the download link, and choose 'Save'.
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_02.png

2.3 Save it to the desktop again...
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_03.png

2.4 Right_click, and choose 'Extract All...'.
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_04.png

2.5 You should see some instructions. Read them anyway, but they should match the rest of this FAQ.
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_05.png

2.6 Double-click on 'Files to install'.
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_06.png

2.7 Select all four files: right_click, and choose 'Copy'.
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_07.png

2.8 Click on 'My Computer', to get an overview of your system.
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_08.png

2.9 The next stage is easier if you click on the 'Folders' button at the top of the screen.
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_09.png

2.10 You need to find the SETI project folder. This is the standard place for BOINC version 5, but your installation may vary (*). Check that the filenames you can see look something like this.
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_10.png

(*) When you're using a BOINC 6.2 version or above, the default Data directory can be found at:

Windows 98/SE/ME: C:\Windows\All Users\BOINC\ or C:\Windows\Profiles\All Users\BOINC\
Windows 2000/XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC\
Windows Vista: C:\ProgramData\BOINC\

The directory can be hidden on Windows 2000, XP and Vista, so make sure you are allowed to view hidden files and folders in your Windows Explorer.

2.11 Right-click anywhere in the folder, and choose 'Paste'.
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_11.png

2.12 If you're already using an earlier optimised application, you may get a warning about overwriting a file: this won't happen for first-time optimisers. Click 'Yes' if you see this.
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_12.png

2.13 The files you last saw in 'Files to install' appear in the folder.
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_13.png

Close everything down, ready for...

III) Stage 3: Activating and testing your new optimised application.

3.1 Right-click on the task bar at the bottom of the screen, and choose 'Task Manager'.
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_14.png

3.2 Click on the 'Processes' tab, and on the header for the 'CPU' column. Note that two copies of the standard Berkeley application are running (yes, they've been running all through the previous 24 stages!).
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_15.png

3.3 EITHER: Exit BOINC, and restart it OR Open the service control panel and restart BOINC from here: this depends on your installation type.
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_16a.png
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_16b.png

3.4 And there you have it: you are now running an optimised SETI application.
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_17.png

3.18 All that is left to do is to clean the temporary files off your desktop.
