The following was written by Nicolas Maire.
-------------------------------------------------

Ok, I'll try and explain how you can tell from the workunit names roughly what the corresponding simulation is about. This list covers the current simulation runs and a few more we were running since the beginning of the year.
First a short reminder of what the different components of the workunit names mean for the malariacontrol application (workunits that start with wu_), for example:

wu_133_234_108426_0_1206358864

The first number (here 133) is the run id. We group simulations into runs, and some of the recent run ids are listed and explained below.
The second number (234) is the scenario id, where scenario stands for a set of input data to the simulation. In the process of estimating model parameters, we reuse the same set of scenarios over and over again, and see how well a given set of parameters fits the observations (the real world data from malariological field studies) that the particular scenario describes. In runs that aim to predict the impact of control interventions, the different scenarios correspond to assumptions about the details of the intervention.
The third number (108426) is the id of the parameter set we use. These parameters define how the mathematical functions that describe the simulated processes are shaped. Have a look at the published papers if you are interested in the details.
The forth number (0) is a seed for the random number generator, and the last number is a unix time stamp, the time the wu was created.

And here now a few more details on what the current run numbers mean:

The workunits with run id >=63 and id<=68 are part of a heterogeneity study. By heterogeneity in this case we mean heterogeneity in transmission (the number of infectious bites) and the human response to malaria infection. These runs try to determine how well different formulation of such models of heterogeneous transmission can explain field observations. This article contains some more information on the rational for such models.

Runs 71-74, 105 to 110, and 140-149 were all simulations that predicted the impact of different vaccination schemes under various conditions. Runs 136-137 and 150-153 predicted the impact of a control intervention called Intermittent Preventive Treatment in infants. These runs are over, and most of the data has been analyzed.

Runs 111-135 are all part of an attempt to learn something about the decay of (human-)acquired immunity to the malaria parasites. Just like runs 63-68, these runs are still ongoing, and will take some more time.

Finally, there is the other science application, optimizer, which has workunits named opt_* .

Michael writes:

opt: optimizer application
36: run number 36 (each run represents a different model being fitted to the dataset.Currently 48 different models are being tested. For details see post "a third science application...")
3700: the 3700th workunit belonging to this run
5: number of config parameters, same for all runs.
790480104 : random number to prevent two workunits from having the same name

More information as to what a workunit is doing is in the input file or, more conveniently for users, in the standard error of a result after it was completed. Just at the end of the stderr_out, after "file content":
The first number, ideally around 9000 for the moment, but up to 1E65, is the "lossfunction", a measure of how closely our models predict the field data. We are searching for the parameter values that have the LOWEST value of the lossfunction. After the lossfunction, all the parameters are listed.

Differences between BOINC 5 and BOINC 6:
(We will be adding to this FAQ when we come across questions not handled in this FAQ)

See BOINC 6 Release Notes for more information on this release.

The Big Difference: Where did BOINC install to?
BOINC 6 uses separate directories for its executables and data files. These directories cannot be merged any more as that will give problems. Data files are all the files that can be written to.

BOINC Programs directory
The default directory where BOINC will install its executables to is:
Windows 32bit: C:\PROGRAM FILES\BOINC
Windows 64bit: C:\PROGRAM FILES (x86)\BOINC for 32bit BOINC, C:\PROGRAM FILES\BOINC for 64bit BOINC
Linux: wherever you are unpacking it/BOINC/
Macintosh: /Applications/BOINC/

BOINC Data directory
The default directory where BOINC will install the data files to is:
Windows 98/SE/ME: C:\Windows\All Users\BOINC or C:\Windows\Profiles\All Users\BOINC (*)
Windows 2000/XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC (*)
Windows Vista/Windows 7: C:\ProgramData\BOINC (*)
Linux: wherever you unpack it/BOINC/
Macintosh OS X: /Library/Application Support/BOINC Data/

(*) This directory may well be hidden, so either put the path to it directly into Windows Explorer, or instruct Windows Explorer to show hidden files and folders.

How to do that?
For Windows 2000 + XP: See here.
For Windows Vista: See here.
For Windows 7: See here.

For Windows you can still tell the BOINC installer different paths to the directories, you don't need to follow the default paths if that's inconvenient.

Depending on the amount of data to be migrated the migration can take anywhere from a few minutes to a couple of hours. You also have to have enough space available on your hard drive for a full copy. The migration is supposed to happen only once, all the next times you upgrade BOINC it won't happen again.

For a comprehensive walkthrough on installing BOINC 6.2 on the Windows flavors, please look at this FAQ, which shows in pictures what you will come across in the installer.

Accounts
BOINC 6 will be able to run under your user name, but its installer will make new accounts specifically for BOINC when installed as a protected service: 'boinc_master', 'boinc_project', 'boinc_admins', 'boinc_users' and 'boinc_projects'.

Before BOINC can use these new accounts, the computer needs to be rebooted at the end of installing BOINC. Without it, BOINC won't work.
Make sure you closed/saved all other programs before clicking Yes on the reboot request as it will start the reboot process immediately!

It will only need this reboot when you installed BOINC for the first time or come from BOINC 4.xx and 5.x.x or had a 6.1.x version installed (including 3rd party BOINC).

Graphics and Screen Saver
The way that graphics work has changed significantly.
In BOINC 5 and before, the graphics module was built into the science application. Come BOINC 6, the science application and graphics application are two separate applications. This is done in case there are problems with the graphics, so that the task won't crash with a computation error. The graphics application may crash, but the computation continues.

Under Windows Vista the BOINC service runs on desktop 0, and the user display is sometimes desktop > 0. Under Vista a built in graphics display would not display at all.

When BOINC 6 is installed in protected mode (a service), it will only allow these new graphics applications to show the graphics or screen saver. Older applications will continue to work without a problem, they just will not show graphics or the project's screen saver. This mode also allows BOINC to run with no user logged in.

When BOINC 6 is installed in graphics compatibility mode (not a service), it will show graphics for both the older applications as well as the newer applications. This is the equivalent of multi-user mode and requires a user to be logged in.

Projects are urged though to make the new graphics applications.

Multiple selections
An enhancement in BOINC 6.2 is the possibility to select multiple tasks, projects and upload&downloads and use the menu to suspend, resume, detach, abort them. All menu options are enabled, so you can even detach multiple projects in quick succession.

Example screen shot of selecting multiple projects
Example screen shot of selecting multiple tasks

Grid View needs to be enabled to use this option.
In BOINC 6.4 this will be followed by selecting and sorting the messages of only one project.

Do's and Don'ts
- The old workaround to get the graphics and screen saver to work with a service install will no longer work. As soon as you tell this version of BOINC to use the local system account, BOINC will refuse to run.

- The screen saver will now work with the password protection set.

- Installing BOINC all in one directory will not work. The BOINC Data directory always needs to be a separate directory from the BOINC directory.

- The Windows installer has some prohibitions on where you can install BOINC, such as the root directory of any drive and protected directories in the Windows environment. If you try it anyway, you will get a warning message and be returned to the directory menu in the installer.

Vista Compatibility
BOINC 6 is fully compatible with Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Domain Controller Incompatibility
The present range of BOINC 6 is incompatible with Domain Controllers, meaning that you cannot install it on your system if it is a DC. This is because the developers used the Local Account API's instead of the Global Account API's.

A fix for this will be available in a future BOINC. When exactly is at this moment unknown. This depends on when the new installer software will be used.

In the mean time, you can still install and use BOINC 5.10.45, although this doesn't support GPUs or multi-threading applications.

BOINC 5.10.45 32bit version
BOINC 5.10.45 64bit version

Uninstalling
With BOINC 6.2 only: When you install BOINC 6.2 over a BOINC 5 version and then uninstall it through Add/Remove Programs, the Data directory is migrated back into the BOINC directory. This is done so you can always return to BOINC 5.10 without needing to move a lot of files by hand.

Once you install a newer BOINC 6 version over BOINC 6.2, then uninstall the newer version, the Data directory stays where it is. It will not migrate back into the pre-BOINC 6 position.

Stability and Problems
This version of BOINC has been tested for over 6 months and is deemed stable by the testers. Which does not mean it will run stably on your machine. If you do have problems with it, please post about it on the BOINC Dev forums, where we will be able to help you or get the developers to chime in.

If you do post there, please supply information on your computer (make and model, CPU type, video card and DirectX version if you have graphics trouble, which operating system, how you installed BOINC and any drivers information you can lay your hands on. Any errors you see, please post those as well. If you see a Blue Screen Of Death we would like to know what it says, not just that you had one.

If you have sudden trouble with a project's science applications, tell us which project it is on, which version of the application and what you have done to see if it was caused by BOINC.

Stopping BOINC when running as a service
Ways to stop BOINC 6.2.x when running as a service:

1) BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Advanced->Shut down connected client->OK->Cancel followed by BOINC Manager->File->Exit.

2) BOINC Manager->File->Exit followed by Windows Start button->Run, type net stop boinc, click OK.

3) BOINC Manager->File->Exit followed by Windows Start button->Run, type services.msc, click OK. Find BOINC in the Services applet. Right click on it, choose Stop from the drop-down menu.

To start BOINC and the service again, just go Start->Programs->BOINC->BOINC Manager link.

Quick shots
Q. I am seeing This a development version of BOINC and may not function properly in my startup messages. Should I worry?
A. No. It appears that this message slipped through. When testing of BOINC 6.2 began, this message was removed from all platforms. Apparently not from the Linux x86_64 version.

The message can safely be ignored.

Q. After installing the Linux version of BOINC 6.2 I now have two BOINC command tools in my directory, boinc_cmd and boinccmd. Which one should I use?
A. To be conform in all platforms, the underscore was removed from the name of both boinc_cmd and boinc_mgr, making them boinccmd and boincmgr. Be sure to change this in your bash scripts.

Q. When running the benchmarks, I am getting an error that says "FP benchmark ran only 0.375000 sec; ignoring; CPU benchmarks error". Is there something wrong with my CPU?
A. This means that a higher CPU-bound process is running. Check in Task Manager (or equivalent) what is taking up the CPU, stop that process, then rerun the CPU benchmarks (Advanced->Run CPU benchmarks).

Always run your benchmarks when the CPU is not in use by higher priority programs.

Q. How do I shut BOINC down now? Exiting BOINC Manager, BOINC and the applications keep on running! And how do I get it running afterwards?
A. There are a couple of ways to shut down the service.
The easiest method to shut down BOINC and get it running again is to go through BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Advanced->Shut down connected client. This will shut down the service. Next you go File->Exit to close down BOINC Manager.

To start BOINC back up, go Start->Programs->BOINC->BOINC Manager. This will start up BOINC Manager, which in turn starts the service.

If you notice that your results say they will take extremely long to complete, while in reality they run for short amounts of time, it is possible that something increased your Result Duration Correction Factor to an extreme number. It should be between 0.5 and 1 to estimate correctly.

Here's how to reset the RDCF. In the example, I'll use the RDCF for the Malariacontrol.net project.
Please substitute Malaria with whichever project you want to reset the RDCF for.

- Exit BOINC (usually BOINC Manager->File->Exit).

- Navigate to your BOINC directory
-- For BOINC 5.10 and before, this is default at c:\program files\boinc\
-- For BOINC 6.2 and above, check where the default BOINC Data directories are. (Linking to another FAQ)

- Find and open client_state.xml with Notepad (or any other clear text editor).

- Use Edit->Find, type in Malaria in the find box, click Find Next.

- Look for the <duration_correction_factor>x.xxxxxx</duration_correction_factor> line and edit the number in there to 1.000000

- Save the client-state.xml file with the File->Save option.

- Restart BOINC (usually Start->Programs->BOINC->BOINC Manager)

The changes take immediately, your estimated time to completion showing more near what the times should be.
Titles don't like braces { and } in them. These cannot be escaped as far as I found.
Someone has to trawl through all the FAQs at http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/ and copy the missing links per FAQ over. - Bowtieguru
What is the oldest version we keep in the FAQs? BOINC 6, BOINC 7?
Can the Einstein moderators check all Einstein FAQs and see which ones are still viable, if any? - Kathryn
What do we do with projects? Do we add them in, leave them out? I feel to leave them out, as there are places enough that show which are available, active etc.
I understand from Agentb that you cannot add to Discussions. I've sent that off to Neil, perhaps a permission problem. Although Users should be able to create Discussions. I dunno. I think I'll make a page on the main index for discussions for now, in which you can leave just about anything, all right? [[User:Jord|Jord]] ([[User talk:Jord|talk]])

The following FAQ was written by Richard Haselgrove and Mark Sattler. They also provided all the screen shots. If you think it's too much for one FAQ, blame them. Both can be found on the Seti forums. :-)

Warning: if you're using a modem, there are a total of 31 pictures to load. Luckily none are too big, but if it causes problems let me know.
Installing an optimised application on the SETI@home project

These notes are written for users of a standard (32-bit) version of Windows XP, running the recommended (5.10.45) version of BOINC

I) Stage 1: Work out what your computer can do.

1.1 Find the CPU-Z website.
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/CPU-Z_10.png

Close everything down, ready for...

II) Stage 2: Find and download an optimised application.

2.1 Visit either the thread on the SETI Message Boards, or the KWSN/Lunatics site.
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_01a.png
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_01b.png

2.2 Find the application that best matches the information you noted down from CPU-Z. I chose SSSE3 - YOUR CHOICE MAY BE DIFFERENT. USE THE INFORMATION FROM YOUR OWN COMPUTER. Click on the download link, and choose 'Save'.
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_02.png

2.3 Save it to the desktop again...
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_03.png

2.4 Right_click, and choose 'Extract All...'.
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_04.png

2.5 You should see some instructions. Read them anyway, but they should match the rest of this FAQ.
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_05.png

2.6 Double-click on 'Files to install'.
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_06.png

2.7 Select all four files: right_click, and choose 'Copy'.
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_07.png

2.8 Click on 'My Computer', to get an overview of your system.
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_08.png

2.9 The next stage is easier if you click on the 'Folders' button at the top of the screen.
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_09.png

2.10 You need to find the SETI project folder. This is the standard place for BOINC version 5, but your installation may vary (*). Check that the filenames you can see look something like this.
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_10.png

(*) When you're using a BOINC 6.2 version or above, the default Data directory can be found at:

Windows 98/SE/ME: C:\Windows\All Users\BOINC\ or C:\Windows\Profiles\All Users\BOINC\
Windows 2000/XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC\
Windows Vista: C:\ProgramData\BOINC\

The directory can be hidden on Windows 2000, XP and Vista, so make sure you are allowed to view hidden files and folders in your Windows Explorer.

2.11 Right-click anywhere in the folder, and choose 'Paste'.
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_11.png

2.12 If you're already using an earlier optimised application, you may get a warning about overwriting a file: this won't happen for first-time optimisers. Click 'Yes' if you see this.
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_12.png

2.13 The files you last saw in 'Files to install' appear in the folder.
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_13.png

Close everything down, ready for...

III) Stage 3: Activating and testing your new optimised application.

3.1 Right-click on the task bar at the bottom of the screen, and choose 'Task Manager'.
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_14.png

3.2 Click on the 'Processes' tab, and on the header for the 'CPU' column. Note that two copies of the standard Berkeley application are running (yes, they've been running all through the previous 24 stages!).
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_15.png

3.3 EITHER: Exit BOINC, and restart it OR Open the service control panel and restart BOINC from here: this depends on your installation type.
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_16a.png
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_16b.png

3.4 And there you have it: you are now running an optimised SETI application.
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/seti/SETI_17.png

3.18 All that is left to do is to clean the temporary files off your desktop.
|-
Vaxfanhttps://boinc.mundayweb.com/wiki/index.php?title=What_is_Virtual_Memory_and_what_are_Page_Faults%3F&diff=339What is Virtual Memory and what are Page Faults?2016-05-21T23:39:52Z
Vaxfan: Saving FAQ 351

What is Virtual Memory?

A program instruction on an Intel 386 or later CPU can address up to 4GB of memory, using its full 32 bits. This is normally far more than the RAM of the machine. (The 32nd exponent of 2 is exactly 4,294,967,296, or 4 GB. 32 binary digits allow the representation of 4,294,967,296 numbers — counting 0.)

So the hardware provides for programs to operate in terms of as much as they wish of this full 4GB space as Virtual Memory, those parts of the program and data which are currently active being loaded into Physical Random Access Memory (RAM).

The processor itself then translates (‘maps’) the virtual addresses from an instruction into the correct physical equivalents, doing this on the fly as the instruction is executed. The processor manages the mapping in terms of pages of 4 Kilobytes each - a size that has implications for managing virtual memory by the system.

What are Page Faults?

Only those parts of the program and data that are currently in active use need to be held in physical RAM. Other parts are then held in a swap file (as it’s called in Windows 95/98/ME: Win386.swp) or page file (in Windows NT versions including Windows 2000 and XP: pagefile.sys).

When a program tries to access some address that is not currently available in physical RAM, it generates an interrupt, called a Page Fault. This asks the system to retrieve the 4 KB page containing the address from the page file (or in the case of code possibly from the original program file). This — a valid page fault — normally happens quite invisibly. Sometimes, through program or hardware error, the page is not there either. The system then has an ‘Invalid Page Fault’ error. This will be a fatal error if detected in a program: if it is seen within the system itself (perhaps because a program sent it a bad request to do something), it may manifest itself as a ‘blue screen’ failure with a STOP error, look at this page on STOP Errors. (I couldn't find it on the MSDN site anymore.)

If there is pressure on space in RAM, then parts of code and data that are not currently needed can be ‘paged out’ in order to make room — the page file can thus be seen as an overflow area to make the RAM behave as if it were larger than it is.

Krunching Keith has posted the information about the MCDN screen saver here:

"The central 3D chart displays real simulation data: You can see the average infectiousness of human hosts, by age group and over time. Everything else is not directly related to the science application. The background is inspired by photographs of African landscapes, with mosquitoes flying around.

Infectiousness of the human host refers to the process of a mosquito biting a human picking up parasites from the blood. We define it as the proportion of mosquitoes getting infected while feeding at random on human individuals within an age group. The values are therefore between 0 and 1.

We display it by age and time because we needed a 3-dimensional plot at the center... The data is aggregated by age following the age groups used in the simulation output. Younger ages usually have narrower groups. The number of groups displayed is currently fixed. (This can create interesting displays for some of the simulated scenarios.)

The data is updated every 6 simulation intervals, where an interval covers 5 days.

The graphics were developed by Jasenko Zivanov, a student at University of Basel. Jaz worked on this project as a summer student in 2005. Before that he designed the LHC@home screensaver.

If you use the "Show graphics" button, you have some control over the display. Here's a short reference:

Mouse:
left key hold to rotate
right key hold to zoom

Key Bindings:
t: toggle soft shadows
a: stop time of day
w: resume daily cycle, fast forward
s: save a screenshot in the current slot directory
f: toggle soft chart display
space: full screen landscape
m: mosquito cam!

The effect of "t" is quite subtle, and on some displays it's hard to make out a difference. "f" smooths the chart in the direction of the age-axis, this one should be visible as soon as there is some data to be displayed.

Nick
Project Scientist"

The screen saver is for now only available on Windows systems.
|-
Vaxfanhttps://boinc.mundayweb.com/wiki/index.php?title=How_to_control_a_service_install_of_BOINC_(Windows)%3F&diff=336How to control a service install of BOINC (Windows)?2016-05-21T23:36:45Z
Vaxfan: Saving FAQ 345

So you installed BOINC as a service under Windows and now you want to stop the service? How do you do that, easily? There are a couple of ways for this.

First off is through the Services control window.
To get there, go to Start->Run, type services.msc (including that extension!) and click OK. The services control window comes up:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v289/Ageless/BOINC/FAQ/Services/Servicescontrolpanel.png
Right clicking BOINC gives you quick commands.

Double clicking BOINC will open the service control window:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v289/Ageless/BOINC/FAQ/Services/BOINCserviceproperties.png
In both you can click Stop (when started), Start (when stopped), Pause (when started) and Resume (when paused).

In the above window you can also control BOINC not to start up when Windows starts up. To do so, change the Startup type from Automatic to Manual. If you set it to Disabled, the service cannot be used, it can also not be started from the command line. Always click Apply before clicking OK.

-------------------------------------
BOINC can also be controlled from the command line, through the net command. The easiest way, I think, is to make shortcuts of these commands, so do this:

Right click anywhere on a free space on the desktop->New->Shortcut.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v289/Ageless/BOINC/FAQ/Services/Desktopshortcut.png

In the URL box fill in cmd /k followed by a space and the command you want to follow.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v289/Ageless/BOINC/FAQ/Services/CommandstartBOINC.png

Click Next, then fill in a name for the command you want to use.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v289/Ageless/BOINC/FAQ/Services/NetStartBOINC.png
Click Finish. The command shortcuts will be saved on your desktop. You can put them anywhere you like, though.

You can make shortcuts for these commands:
Stop BOINC = cmd /k net stop boinc
Start BOINC = cmd /k net start boinc

Additional options are:
Pause BOINC = cmd /k net pause boinc
Resume BOINC = cmd /k net continue boinc

(With thanks to Richard Haselgrove for the screen shots.)

BOINC 6's service install procedure differs from BOINC 5's service install procedure, by setting up "sandboxing". This means that BOINC will make accounts for itself in your Windows and assign itself rights to run BOINC as a service. By enabling the Protected application execution option in the installer, you will be installing BOINC as a service.
_____________________________________

Note: The following pictures were taken from the 6.2.1 installer. If you're using a newer version of the installer, options may differ. When using Windows 98/ME/SE, some options are unavailable.

Note: When upgrading a BOINC 6 version it is not necessary to uninstall the previous version. You can install the new BOINC directly over the old version. No work will be lost.

Note: Since BOINC 6.6, the protected application execution option is no longer set by default. You will have to set it yourself if you want to install BOINC as a service.

Note: Do NOT use the protected application execution installation in Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8, or any of the Windows Server versions if you also want to use a GPU for crunching. The GPU will not be detected when BOINC is installed as a service. See the CUDA/CAL FAQ for more on that.

If you do want to uninstall BOINC first, do know that the BOINC 6.2 uninstaller will migrate your data directory back to the BOINC directory. Not a problem in normal cases, but it can take quite a while if you run projects like CPDN with large gigabyte files and caches.

Later uninstallers no longer move the Data directory back.
______________________________________

To start the installer, double-click the program's icon just as you would any other.
You'll be greeted with the BOINC Splash screen starting the installer, then on to the welcome screen.
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/boinc6/Install6-1.png
Click Next to continue.

http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/boinc6/Install6-2-accept.png
You must click the radio button for I accept the terms in the license agreement. before you are allowed to continue. Click Next.

http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/boinc6/Install6-3-choices.png
The choices screen.

The BOINC directory will default to C:\Program Files\BOINC\

On Windows 98/SE/ME the Data directory will default to C:\Windows\All Users\BOINC Data\ or C:\Windows\Profiles\All Users\BOINC Data\

On Windows 2000/XP/Server the Data directory will default to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC Data\

On Windows Vista the Data directory will default to C:\ProgramData\BOINC

The ProgramData directory may be hidden on Windows Vista. To see it, go to the root of the drive where you allowed it to be installed, then go to Tools>Folder Options>View Tab. Select "Show hidden files and folders". It will now be visible.

By default all options here are checked.

If you want to change any path, or change the default checked options, click Advanced.

http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/boinc6/Install6-4-advanced.png
In the Advanced screen, you can change the paths of the install directories and the way you want BOINC to be installed.

!!!! At all times keep the directories separate. When you try to install BOINC in one directory (say C:\BOINC) and run the Data directory as a subdirectory of the BOINC directory (say C:\BOINC\Data\), things will go haywire once you run BOINC. So just don't do it. !!!!

You can further choose to install BOINC with the screensaver activated*, to install BOINC as a protected installation and for it to be used and changed by all users on the computer, or not.

Seeing how some people are confused about this, I'll explain again: The Protected application execution option is the service installation option.

- If you use the protected option, BOINC can only show graphics and screen savers from projects that use BOINC 6 compliant applications (separate science and graphics applications).

- If you want to see the graphics and screen savers of the older applications as well (with it all built-in into the science application), then you need to uncheck this option. BOINC will then not be installed as a service! (trying to install as a service and then using the graphics work around no longer works. This has been disabled in BOINC 6).

- If you allow BOINC to be controlled by all users on the computer, everyone can start BOINC Manager and attach to projects/detach from projects. When you uncheck this option and others want to run BOINC Manager, they will get a message saying to contact the administrator to add them to the 'boinc_users' group.

http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/boinc6/Install6-5-Install.png
Click Install to continue.

From here on in, the installer will uninstall a previous version of BOINC if you had one and install the new version. It will add the boinc_admins and boinc_users groups to your computer, as well as the users groups boinc_master and boinc_project. It will add the service and start the service.
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/boinc6/installer.png

Warning: When you upgrade from a pre-6 version of BOINC, or from a version 6 provided by a 3rd party, you will need to reboot when the installer has finished. You also get this warning on the end screen of the installer:
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/boinc6/finish-reboot.png

There is now an option given to reboot later, but do know that you cannot run BOINC until you have rebooted the computer.

See the BOINC Six Client Installer for Windows page and the BOINC Six Logic Setup page for more information.

* The screen saver is installed by default, but not active when you don't want it to be. To start the screen saver, go to the properties of your Windows Display, screensaver tab, choose BOINC as the screen saver. That's all.

To stop BOINC 6.x when running as a service
Ways to stop BOINC 6.2.x when running as a service:
1) BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Advanced->Shut down connected client->OK->Cancel followed by BOINC Manager->File->Exit.

Passwords
Q. Can I change the password on the boinc_master and boinc_project accounts?
A. Yes you can.
You will need to need to go to the service control manager and update the password to start the service (boinc_master). (BOINC->Properties->Logon)
Next you need to use a base64 encoder to rehash the password and fill this in in the client_auth.xml file in your BOINC data directory. You can use a base64 encoder online, such as this one.

Do know that the passwords on the accounts are set to never expire.

Disabling BOINC Manager starting up
Q. Can I stop BOINC Manager from starting up?
A. Yes, you can.
In BOINC Manager go to the Advanced view, Advanced, Options, take the check off of "Run Manager at login?" and click OK. You may need to restart BOINC Manager to get that one to stick.

Alternative Advanced option, use regedit to go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\ and remove the link to boincmgr.exe ... (you have to do this for each user)

Prerequisite: To install BOINC as a service, you need a Windows administrator account with a password. The service install is unavailable on Windows 98/SE/ME.

The following pictures are from the 5.10.45 BOINC installer. When you're using an earlier version, options may differ.

Start the installer by double clicking it as you would any program. The first screen shows up:

http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/boinc5/Install5-1.png
Click Next to continue.

http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/boinc5/Install5-2-accept.png
You must click the radio button for I accept the terms in the license agreement. before you are allowed to continue. Click Next.

http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/boinc5/Install5-3-path.png
The install path is remembered from the last time you installed BOINC. If you don't want to change it, click Next.

The default link used is C:\Program Files\BOINC\
!!!! When you use Vista, do know that this OS doesn't like it when programs write to disk in the \Program Files\ directory. Since BOINC writes to disk a lot, it is advised to change the install directory to something like C:\BOINC\ !!!!

If you do want to change it, click the Change... button.
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/boinc5/Install5-4-change_path.png
You will then get here, where you can change your path to anywhere else, either by typing it or by using the mouse to click your way to it. When done, click OK to return to the 3rd screen where you click Next.

http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/boinc5/Install5-5-service.png
Choose option 3 to set the service install and click Next.

http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/boinc5/Install5-6-nick_pass.png
By default BOINC will give your computer name\account name already, but if it doesn't, add it in the top box here in the way shown, with the dividing backslash. Make sure there are no leading or trailing spaces as they aren't necessary anywhere in the box.
Both the computer name and the account name are NOT case sensitive.

To find your computer name, go Right-click My Computer, Properties, Computer name tab.

Your account name is the name you started Windows with.
To find it, go Start(->Settings)->Control Panel->Users and Passwords. The account you're using is shown first.

Fill in the password for your Windows account. Do know that the password IS case sensitive. You will not see the password you type, it is automatically obscured by asterisks.
If you type in the password wrong, when you click Next you will get an error message.

If you want to enable the screen saver*, check the box.
If you want to have BOINC Manager start up when you log into Windows, check the box.

Note that BOINC Manager starting up isn't needed with the service install, the service will start up before you log in into Windows. For a clean look, place a shortcut to BOINC Manager on your desktop or in your quick-launch bar.

Click Next.

http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/boinc5/Install5-7-confirmation.png
Grant the selected username permission to log on as a service by clicking Yes.

http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/resources/boinc5/Install5-8-Install.png
Click Install to continue.

From here on in, the installer will uninstall a previous version of BOINC if you had one and install the new version, then add it as a service and start the service for you. There is no need to reboot the computer.

If you want to use the graphics option on BOINC as a service, check this FAQ which explains how you do that.

* The screen saver is installed by default, but not active when you don't want it to be. To start the screen saver, go to the properties of your Windows Display, screensaver tab, choose BOINC as the screen saver. That's all.

Exit code -1 (0xffffffff) seems to be an incompatibility between the science application and your video card. You'll run into it when you use the graphics or screen saver, tasks running at the time when either is activated will error out with the above error message.

It's always good to report these errors on the project forums, especially when the project doesn't have graphics.

Mostly found on ATI video cards.
Try updating your video card drivers and DirectX version.

But the only sure workaround in case the project does have graphics is not to look at the graphics or to use the screen saver.

Davyd McColl at Seti told us that he can get the screen saver to work with the password protection if he first locks his workstation.

By default, in BOINC 4.xx to 5.10.45, if your screen saver is password protected in Windows, the screen saver will only show the BOINC logo. This is an incompatibility between BOINC and Windows and has so far been unsolvable by the developers. They blame Windows.

When you first lock your workstation when you leave it, the Seti screen saver will work perfectly all right. To do so, press CTRL+ALT+DEL and click Lock Computer. That should do it.

When using BOINC as a service install, by default you will not have any graphics or the screen saver of the project. This can be worked around though.

- Start->Run.
- type services.msc anc click OK.
- In the newly opened services window, located BOINC, right click on it, properties.
- Stop the service from running, by clicking Stop.
- Go to the Log On tab.
- Choose the option Log On as Local system account.
- Check the option underneath that, Allow service to interact with the desktop.
- Click Apply.
- Go to the General tab.
- Start the service.
- Exit the services window.

Although this workaround will work for BOINC 4.45 to 5.10.45, it won't work on Windows Vista.

For BOINC 6 it will work differently, for now. If a project uses BOINC 6 compliant applications, the graphics / screen saver application is a separate application. These will work under the normal BOINC account. The graphics of application of the time before BOINC 6 work only in Simple View and only with the above work around.

When you're seeing predominantly the below error messages, there are things you can check if it's on your side, or the project's side.

2/6/2008 11:13:32 AM||Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
2/6/2008 11:13:33 AM||Access to reference site succeeded - project servers may be temporarily down.
2/6/2008 11:13:35 AM|Project-name@home|Scheduler request failed: Timeout was reached

First of all check if the project's servers are online. Most projects have a Server status link on their front page. Check through there if the project isn't down for backup or other maintenance.
If the project is up, go do the next thing.

Try to ping the project. To do this, you need the project's address and the command line.
Go to Start->Run and type cmd, then click OK.
In the window that opens, type ping project URL, where the URL is without the http:// part. Example given: ping setiathome.berkeley.edu
Now press Enter.

Your computer will ping the project computer 4 times and listen for the returns, showing you how long it takes for the pings to return. If you can ping without any packet losses, then that's good.

In the same command window, try a trace route to the project server. Again you need the project URL without the http:// part. Type in tracert project URL, example given: tracert setiathome.berkeley.edu and hit Enter.

This will trace the route your signal is taking across the internet to the project server.
If there are any time outs along the way, then that's not good. Those servers are down, or have other trouble. Check if your signal reaches the project server.

To be able to use any of these traces in a post, you can also let them go to a text file.
To do so, type for ping: ping project URL > C:\ping.txt
For tracert type: tracert project URL > C:\ racert.txt

You can post that info in a post on the project forums when you ask for help.

We'll now check what BOINC is doing, through some debugging flags in the core client configuration file, cc_config.xml
Check this FAQ on how to set up the cc_config.xml file.

Add to it:
<cc_config>
<log_flags>
<task>1</task>
<file_xfer>1</file_xfer>
<sched_ops>1</sched_ops>
<file_xfer_debug>1</file_xfer_debug>
<http_debug>1</http_debug>
<http_xfer_debug>1</http_xfer_debug>
<network_status_debug>1</network_status_debug>
</log_flags>
</cc_config>

The first 3 are always in cc_config.xml, they'll always need to be on.
With the file_xfer_debug flag we'll track any files you upload or download.
With the http_debug flag we'll debug general http operations.
With the http_xfer_debug flag we'll check your network operations.
While with the network_status_debug flag we'll check if you can make contact to the outside world.

The best thing to do before you activate this cc_config.xml is exit BOINC, navigate to your BOINC directory and rename your stdoutdae.txt file to stdoutdae.old
When BOINC restarts it'll read the cc_config.xml file and make a new stdoutdae.txt file all by itself, immediately logging everything we need.

Run BOINC. Update on the project you have problems with.
Let BOINC run for a while, through at least one time out on the scheduler.

If you now make a post on the forums, you can add to it:
What your ping does. Post the contents of ping.txt
What your tracert does. Post the contents of tracert.txt
What BOINC does. Post the contents of stdoutdae.txt while it went through one scheduler refusal.

0xC0000142 means STATUS_DLL_INIT_FAILED which can happen when an application attempts to create a new process while the OS is shutting down, and when the desktop heap is fully utilized.

Mostly happening on Vista, but can also happen on older Windows versions, especially when you reset the computer at the time BOINC starts crunching new tasks, previously not crunched.

BOINC 5.10.30 and above have code included that will make sure these tasks are restarted on a reset of the computer. Older versions of BOINC will abort the tasks.

The Quake Catcher Network (QCN) is a research project that uses Internet-connected computers to do research, education, and outreach in seismology. You can participate by downloading and running a free program on your computer. Currently only certain Mac (OS X) PPC and Intel laptops are supported -- recent ones which have a built-in accelerometer.

Please note that this software is best run as a single-processor job, so BOINC global prefs will be set to use 1 CPU, and only run when idle for 3 minutes. QCN is not a project you will want to run (especially in the alpha stage) alongside other BOINC projects.

This error has the same ground as exit code -1073741510 (0xc000013a) (On Windows Vista) has for the BOINC client errors.

When you log off of Windows the application gets terminated quite abruptly. Apparently BOINC/the science applications don't like that too much. Vista can shut down in 2 seconds... that's not enough time for BOINC to stop.

So before you shut down your computer next time, exit BOINC.
- If you run as a normal user install, it's done through Boinc Manager, File->Exit.
- If you run as a service install, you need to stop the service first. Start->Run, type net stop boinc and hit enter.

Or:
Copy the following text and paste it into the Notepad window, called WaitToKill.reg

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

"WaitToKillServiceTimeout"="20000"

The 20000 is 20 seconds. Increase/decrease to your liking.
To add this to the registry double-click the file. The UAC will come up, press continue, press Yes on the next window and OK on the one there-after. You need to reboot to make the changes have effect.

You can also use the following bit of code in a batchfile (.bat).
Put it in Notepad, save it as Shutdown.bat (make sure the extension is .bat, not .txt)
Do change the path between %PROGRAMFILES% if your BOINC lives elsewhere.

cd %PROGRAMFILES%\BOINC
boinccmd --quit
shutdown -s -t 20

Updating to BOINC 5.10.45 can also fix this error. It has special code in for Vista to count this as a non-error.

You've nurtured your low hostID number for a couple of years and all of a sudden BOINC decides it's time you got a newer one. Is it possible to revert to the older number? Well yes, here's how.

1. Make sure you have no tasks in your queue (Finish & Upload, abort, report them all)
2. Go to the web site of the project, your list of computers and find your old Host ID number.
3. Stop and Close BOINC.
4. Edit client_state.xml, find the <hostid> tags and replace the number here with the old ID.
5. Find the <rpc_seqno> tag and increment the number here with one or two.
6. Save client_state.xml
7. Restart BOINC.

Now whatever you do, do not merge the hostIDs on the web site, or else you'll be stuck with the higher ID number. Just wait for all the tasks in the new ID's number to time out, then delete the ID when it has no tasks listed anymore.

So you want to use your bigger D: drive to run BOINC from, but don't want to uninstall BOINC and reinstall it to the new drive. That's possible, if you use the <data_dir> tag in cc_config.xml
You'll be BOINC 6 compatible then as well.

How to do that? You need BOINC 5.10.20 at minimum. So if you have a lower version, update
to the latest available. Exit BOINC, making sure it's not running. (BOINC Manager->File->Exit; or in case you're running as a service, Start->Run, type net stop boinc, press OK)

Navigate to your BOINC directory, default at C:\Program Files\BOINC
First check if you already have a file called cc_config.xml; if you do not, make one with Notepad, make sure you save it as an All Files option, so it doesn't get the .txt extension.

Open cc_config.xml with Notepad.
Here's what should be in it:

<cc_config>
<log_flags>
<unparsed_xml>1</unparsed_xml>
</log_flags>
<options>
<data_dir>D:\BOINC Data\</data_dir>
</options>
</cc_config>

Save cc_config.xml to your BOINC directory.

OK, now we'll make sure that BOINC can find the data on that path. Make a directory on D: called \BOINC Data\
Copy the following directories (and everything in them) from your BOINC directory to D:\BOINC Data: \BOINC\projects\, \BOINC\slots\

(\skins\ and \locale\ can stay in the BOINC directory)

Next copy all these files from your BOINC directory to your BOINC Data directory:
All account_*.xml files.
All job_log_*.txt files.
All master_*.xml files.
All sched_*.xml files.
All statistics_*.xml files.
ca-bundle.crt (*)
client_state.xml and client_state_prev.xml
global_prefs.xml and (if applicable) global_prefs_override.xml
And if you want to, stderrdae.txt and stdoutdae.txt

(we copy, in case it doesn't work for some reason; you can always delete the originals after a week of flawless operations.)

(*) From BOINC 6.2.21 onwards the ca-bundle.crt file needs to be back in the normal BOINC directory, not in the BOINC Data directory. But if all is as it should be, the BOINC installer will put this file in the correct directory.

Make sure that the BOINC Data directory and subdirectories have full read/write permission for your user group. To do so, right click on the \BOINC Data\ directory in the tree, Properties, Security.

OK, that should be it. Restart BOINC: Open BOINC Manager, or in case you're running as a service, Start->Run, type net start boinc and press OK.

Check in BOINC Manager that the path to the data dir is shown correctly.
Day-month-year Time Data directory: D:\BOINC Data\

-----------------------
Much of the above can also be used when you migrate manually to BOINC 6, which uses the separate Data directory exceptionally.

There is a difference then though. For BOINC 6, you will need to place the gui_rpc_auth.cfg and cc_config.xml files in the Data directory - then edit the cc_config.xml file and take out the <data_dir> line and save that file - else these files will not be used by BOINC.

Local preferences:
Open BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Advanced->Preferences.
Go to the Processor tab.

In BOINC 5.10 and earlier, this is "On multiprocessor systems, use at most x processors". (*)

In BOINC 6.1.0 and later this is "On multiprocessors, use at most 100 % of the processors".

Use of the website preferences:
Open Your Account->Computing preferences->edit preferences->Processor usage.
For 5.10 and earlier versions, use the "On multiprocessors, use at most x processors" option.
For 6.1 and later, use the "On multiprocessors, use at most 100 % of the processors" option.

Make sure you save the changes to the website with the button at the bottom, then update BOINC: Open BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Projects tab->select the project you saved your changes at->click Update.

If you want to hand edit anything, edit global_prefs.xml and/or global_prefs_override.xml in your BOINC directory.

(*)
Not all have the Advanced Preferences option in BOINC Manager. This GUI option came along in 5.9.0, if I am not mistaken. The global_prefs_override.xml option came along in BOINC 5.4

You can add your BOINC stats to your Facebook profile at http://apps.facebook.com/boincstats.

To use this Facebook application you need an All-In-One account from http://boinc.mundayweb.com.

Once you have signed up for an All-In-One you can customise your stats graphics that will be used in your Facebook profile.

When you add the BOINC Stats application to your Facebook profile, you will be asked to associate your Facebook account with your All-In-One account. Note: You will only have to do this once.
Access to reference site succeeded - project servers may be temporarily down.2016-05-21T23:09:08Z
Vaxfan: Saving FAQ 288

Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site. Access to reference site succeeded - project servers may be temporarily down.

This can mean one of a few things:
a) The project server is down. Nothing you can do about it, except wait until it’s back up. If the project’s website is available for browsing, check the front-page news or message boards for information about outages.
b) The project server is up, but your internet connection isn’t reaching it. This is called a “black hole serverâ€, where the line you’re following goes into a server node on the Internet and doesn't come out, usually because the node is down. Updating to a newer version of BOINC might help, especially if you’re still using v4.x or 5.4.x. Quitting and relaunching BOINC may refresh its routing information; failing that, try rebooting the computer.
c) The client is being blocked by a firewall or proxy, one that does allow pings through on port 80, but not much else by way of communication. Make sure BOINC has permission to go through the firewall and, if you’re behind a proxy, that BOINC is set up to use the correct proxy address.

The reference site that BOINC calls upon is www.google.com. Why Google? Because Google is always up. So if BOINC finds that it can reach Google but not the project, it’s not the client’s fault and the Internet connection itself is OK.

With thanks to Bernd Machenschalk of Einstein for this explanation.

In general there are two reasons for an exit code 4:

- a signal 4 (illegal instruction) happens when the application tries to execute commands the CPU isn't capable of (e.g. AltiVec code running on a G3 Mac)

- an error in the command-line that is passed from the Client to the application. Typically something went wrong in the communication of the Core Client, talking to either the server, the application or the file-system of the host.

Always report this error on the project's forums. The developers will want to know about it and fix it.
Disabling the screen saver will give you a work-around for it. Report this error on the forums at all times.

From AppDebugWin in the Wiki:

Starting with Visual Studio 2005, Microsoft re-vamped the whole C Runtime Library. Part of the re-vamp process was to do parameter checking on each function. Places that would normally return a NULL value now cause a structured exception to be thrown.

The nature of this structured exception is different than most as they specifically coded it so that it will not engage the BOINC Runtime Debugger and it'll display a dialog box asking the user if they wish to debug the error. If the user cancels the error code 0xc000000d is returned without any more information.

When running a 64-bit Linux on a project that sends 32-bit applications only, you can run into results erroring out with process exited with code 22.

The explanation for this is that 32-bit binaries don't just work on every 64-bit Linux. If for example you install a fresh Ubuntu 6.10 or 7.04, 32-bit binaries won't work. They are not even recognized as valid executables. You first have to install the ia32 package and dependent packages. Further, for programs that link with the graphic library, you will manually have to copy a 32-bit libglut library to the usr/lib32 directory.

If after this you still get client errors, post on the forums of the project that you have this problem and ran ldd on the executable in the projects directory to see what libraries are missing. Post which libraries these are and ask for instructions on how to get them.
You see these errors at the top of the messages when starting BOINC.

This only happens when you have had an app_info.xml file and the applications plus debug file set manually in your projects directory, but later removed the app_info.xml file and not reset your project.

BOINC doesn't know where the entries of these files came from in client_state.xml as it has no recollection of downloading them by itself. And so it will give this error message and even try to download the files from the server, if necessary.

Solution: Reset the project. It will then download the correct applications.

While more and more people get PCs these days, they also forget that you can't add hardware and remove it without uninstalling the drivers for said hardware ad infinitum without something eventually breaking.

In the scenario where you had two GPUs of different makers (e.g. Nivida and ATI) and removed one of them for the time being, make sure you uninstall the drivers for the card through Add/Remove Programs (Win2k/XP) or Programs and features (Vista and 7).

However, even removing the drivers like this will still leave all kind of junk on your system, with thanks to the GPU manufacturers. So you need something extra to remove these drivers. I advise using Display Driver Uninstaller. It's freeware.

The best way to clean drivers is to first uninstall the drivers using the official uninstallers, reboot in Safe Mode and run DDU. Use it to remove whatever remnants of the videocard are still on the system and boot back into normal mode.

Without removing these drivers (remnants), BOINC can crash, hang, lose communications with BOINC Manager, start up extremely slowly and other freakinii.

BOINC science applications use shared memory to communicate with the core client, and a certain amount is reserved for each current task, whether running or waiting. The default configuration of a multi-CPU Mac (regardless of how much RAM is installed) is sometimes inadequate to support several projects at once.

If you get this error message, which is usually followed by a “Couldn't start or resume: -144†error in the current computation, it may help to set your BOINC general preference “Leave applications in memory while suspended?†to no; however, the problem will probably just become less frequent rather than being solved, and moreover some projects’ applications, those that save checkpoints infrequently (or erratically), may not take well to this setting.

A better solution is available—if you don’t mind reconfiguring your system’s kernel a little. The method, accompanied by a more detailed description of the issue, is outlined in Configuring Shared Memory on Mac OS X from Spy Hill Research (hosts of the BOINC Pirates@home project). It involves creating a text file “/etc/sysctl.conf†that contains the following commands:

kern.sysv.shmmax=16777216
kern.sysv.shmmin=1
kern.sysv.shmmni=128
kern.sysv.shmseg=32
kern.sysv.shmall=4096
and rebooting the computer. This will quadruple the default allocation of shared memory.

Note that the problem may manifest with slightly different error messages: “Can't create shared memory: system shmat†followed by “Couldn't start or resume: -146â€.
It means that on an earlier attempt your BOINC was able to report all your tasks to the server, but the server was not able to send the acknowledgment about the report back to you, probably due to congestion on the line.

This pop-up will come up at any time that BOINC Manager cannot communicate with the client.

- This can happen when you didn't allow the BOINC binary and the BOINC Manager binary through your firewall on TCP port 31416.

In this case, just allow both of these binaries (in Windows boinc.exe and boincmgr.exe) to pass through your firewall. The BOINC binary needs to be able to get onto the internet on TCP ports 80 and 443 as well.

- This can happen when you have far too many tasks in queue for BOINC Manager to display in real-time.

BOINC Manager is a graphical user interface that makes it easier for you to give commands to the client (BOINC). It talks through remote procedure calls with the client (hence why it needs to go through the firewall). It will update the times on tasks that are running and show messages in the Messages tab/Event Log. The update rate for all this is once a second.

As an example, when you have 1,200 tasks in queue, it will take BOINC 1.5 seconds to read and digest that information. As you can imagine, there is no way to compress that into the 1 second refresh rate, while with the more tasks you have in queue this time will only go up.

Which is why the developers have chosen another thing, the "Show all tasks/Show active tasks" button, which is on (showing "Show all tasks") by default and which will hide all tasks that are not running.

This means that only the tasks that are actually running, have run for a bit and are waiting to run and those that are suspended, will show in your Tasks tab.

Those waiting to start, waiting to be reported, downloading, uploading and aborted will not show in this list, since they aren't considered active.

Um... but I pressed the "Show all tasks" button and now I can't get it to reverse. There's no time to press the button again.

On Windows:

Exit BOINC Manager.
Start->Run, type regedit, click OK.
Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Space Sciences Laboratory, U.C. Berkeley\BOINC Manager\Tasks and change the value of ActiveTasksOnly from 0 to 1.
Then start BOINC Manager. Changes are immediate.

On Linux:

The configuration file is in your user home directory and called .BOINC Manager (e.g. /home/remco/.BOINC Manager, this file may be hidden)
Edit the value for ActiveTasksOnly from zero to one.

On the Mac (OS X):

The configuration file is saved in /Users//Library/Preferences/BOINC Manager Preferences, edit the key word ActiveTasksOnly in the section.

This message occurs when the download is incomplete or corrupt. A glitch along the way in the internet connection. It may seem as if everything of the file is there, but if you only miss a couple of bytes, it may seem that the download was completed correctly, when it wasn't.

It also happens when your temporary internet files directory is full.

So try these two simple steps:

1. Delete your temporary internet files.

2. Download the file again, if you have the chance save it to a different directory (folder or map) than you're used to.
(try right clicking on the link and doing a Save As.. that way you can specify what path to save to, not have it go automatically to your temporary internet files folder).

In the Linux version of BOINC Manager, if you try to click on the links to the project web pages and you get an error message about not being able to find BROWSER or BROWSER not being set then you need to do the following -

edit /etc/profile to include the following -

BROWSER="/path/to/browser"

export BROWSER

- where /path/to/browser is the executable path to your browser. To find out what this is open a terminal window and type whereis browser - so if your browser is firefox you would type whereis firefox. The result is your executable path, which maybe something like /usr/local/bin/firefox.

In this case the exact code you would add to /etc/profile would be -

BROWSER="/usr/local/bin/firefox"

export BROWSER
The stderr out doesn't show anything helpful in these cases. Again, Bernd (and probably a lot of participants) would be thankful for a hint why these are happening.

Exit code 10: It means that the App could not resume from a previously written checkpoint. Again, the output listed in stderr out of the result should give a hint why. Most of the errors we get of this type are apparently due to a broken harddisk sector or even filesystems (e.g. some have the checkpoint file point to what looks like a portion of the client_state.xml). Again there's one error of this type we are trying to understand better in order to do something about it: It's an empty checkpoint file, in which case there will be an "EOF encountered" listed at the bottom of stderr out.

The below error was for the S5R1-5 runs only. It's no longer up-to-date for the S5R6 and above runs. Please look at the default exit code -1073741819 (0xc0000005) error instead.

Exit code -1073741819 (0xC0000005): This is the famous "General Access Violation". There a numerous reasons for this error to occur, from hardware problems to graphics drivers and more. Ideally when this happens, the "Windows Runtime Debugger" should start up and write a stack dump to stderr out that helps to further diagnose the problem. If the "Access Violation" is listed in the "*** Dump of the Graphics thread ***", it was almost certainly a problem with the graphics driver. The most common cause for an Access Violation listed in the "*** Dump of the Worker thread ***" shows "houghmap.c:" near the end of the first line of the Callstack. This is a problem that we might be able to do something about, we are currently hunting this. Apparently it only happens on certain machines, it might be related to the data these hosts are processing, but may also be a property of the hardware or other software on the system.

In case you forgot your password and you can't log in on the project that you registered to, you can use your account key to log in with.

Option 1:
To find your account key, open the account_*.xml file for that project in your native BOINC directory.
Example given, you forgot your Einstein@Home password, so you need to open account__einstein.phys.uwm.edu.xml .. By just clicking on the file, it usually opens up in your web browser. Else use Notepad or another text editor to edit the file.

Now look for a 32 character key string in between the <authenticator></authenticator> tags.
Copy this key. Close account_.xml (do NOT save it when you opened it in a text editor! Just close it).

Go to the Project web page and try to enter your account, a log in screen should come up.
Paste the 32 character key string into the option "log in with account key" and press the Log in with account key button.

This now allows you to get to your account where you can change your password (click password, type a new password twice and press the Change password button). Do not forget it again. ;-)

Option 2:
If you aren't attached to the project, you will not have the account_*.xml file for that project.
In this case go to the web site of this project, press the Your Account link. The log in screen comes up. Now press the small blue link saying Click here on the account key option. The link you go to is a bit of a misnomer, as it's a /get_passwd.php page. Fill in the email address that you registered to that project with and press OK. The authenticator key (or account key) will be emailed to you.

To log in, check your email and copy out the 32 character key string.
Go to the Project web page and try to enter your account, a log in screen should come up.
Paste the 32 character key string into the option "log in with account key" and press the Log in with account key button.

This now allows you to get to your account where you can change your password (click password, type a new password twice and press the Change password button).
